Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Nisab Threshold and How is it Determined?

The Nisab amount is the minimum limit for being considered religiously wealthy and liable for Zakat. If the assets owned, excluding basic needs and debts, reach the value of 80.18 grams of gold or its market value in your selected currency, the Nisab amount is considered reached.

If the total value of your assets (Euro, Dollar, Gold, etc.) exceeds the equivalent of 80.18 grams of gold in your selected currency at current gold prices, you are obliged to give Zakat. You can check the current selected currency-based Nisab amount using our calculation tool above.

How is Zakat Calculated?

Zakat calculation is done by deducting debts from the total value of cash, gold, and other assets you own. If the remaining net asset value exceeds the Nisab limit, 2.5% (one-fortieth) of this amount is set aside as Zakat.

The calculation module on our site operates based on the main currency (Euro, Dollar, Sterling, or Turkish Lira) you select above. Even if you enter your assets in different currencies or as gold, our system converts all your assets to your selected main currency based on current cross rates and presents the Zakat amount you need to pay in this currency. This allows you to make an accurate calculation compliant with European standards.

Which Assets are Subject to Zakat?
Zakat is given from assets that have the quality of 'nema', that is, increasing/generating gain. The main assets subject to Zakat are:
  • Gold and Silver: Regardless of whether they are grams, bullion, or jewelry.
  • Cash and Currency: Euro, Dollar, etc. cash in your bank account or on hand.
  • Trade Goods: Commercial products purchased for the purpose of selling.
  • Investment Funds: Stocks, crypto assets, and other financial values.
Zakat is not paid for the house one lives in (in Europe or Turkey), the car one rides, and household items. You should only include your savings-oriented assets in our selected currency-based calculation tool.
Calculating Gold Zakat

When calculating gold Zakat, the total weight of jewelry or investment gold (quarter, bullion, etc.) you have is taken as the basis. If your total gold amount is 80.18 grams or more, 2.5% of the current market value of this asset is given as Zakat.

Our calculation tool converts the gram information you enter into your selected currency based on instant gold rates and shows you the Zakat amount you need to pay in that currency. You can pay this amount as gold or as cash based on the resulting Euro equivalent if you wish.

Currency Zakat (Dollar, Euro, etc.)

Zakat on your selected currency savings is calculated directly at a rate of 2.5% (one-fortieth). If you have savings in different currencies, the equivalent of these amounts in your selected currency on the calculation day is taken as the basis when calculating Zakat.

To avoid dealing with calculating the cross rates of your assets in different currencies one by one, simply enter the relevant currency into our module. Our system automatically combines all your assets on your selected currency basis and calculates your total Zakat liability.

To Whom Can I Give My Zakat?

Zakat can be given to the 8 classes specified in the Quran (the poor, debtors, travelers, etc.). Zakat is not given to mothers, fathers, spouses, and children; however, it can be given to siblings and relatives in need.

You can safely deliver your calculated Zakat to those in need, refugees, and victims in crisis regions all over the world through Diversity Europe. Your donations are delivered to the real beneficiaries with the principle of transparency.

How Does This Tool Work? (Step by Step)

Our calculation system automatically performs complex operations for you in these 4 simple steps:

Input: You enter the amount of gold, currency, or cash you have into the relevant boxes.

Update: Our system instantly pulls the most current gold and currency rates from world markets.

Conversion: It converts and sums up all your assets of different types (e.g., your Dollars, quarter gold coins) into your chosen main currency (e.g., Euro).

Result: If you have debts, it deducts them, and if your remaining net money exceeds the wealth threshold (Nisab), it displays the 2.5% Zakat amount you need to pay on the screen.

Is This Calculation Tool Reliable and Where Do Rates Come From?

Our calculation tool bases currency rates on European Central Bank data and gold/silver prices on international commodity markets. Data is updated automatically when you press the 'Refresh Data' button or at certain intervals.

The calculation takes place entirely in your browser; your financial information is not stored on our servers, ensuring your privacy is completely protected.
